IN THE MIX

IN THE MIX is an evening of eclectic high-energy dance for a new age. Artists who are at the top of their fields, and from a variety of disciplines will perform. The show mixes a diverse range of styles - ballet, jazz, tap, cheerleading, rap, social dance, gymnastics, circus arts, martial arts, and live music. Take art and make it entertaining; take athletics and make it art. IN THE MIX is a fresh, fun, fast-paced 90-minute celebration of movement that exudes energy and pulses with excitement. And, this cross-genre work aims to educate audiences about the world of dance from a variety of different angles.

IN THE MIX and evolution of the DeAngelo aesthetic:

IN THE MIX exemplifies the aesthetic and performance concepts behind the nonprofit organization of DEANGELO PROJECTS: DANCE! It is a model for future shows to be produced and presented by the company, which will also bring together artists from various genres and styles, marrying their talents in unexpected ways to produce innovative performance that defies categorization. Not just a specific performance piece, IN THE MIX brings to the stage a formula developed and perfected by Ann Marie DeAngelo of over two decades of work in the dance world creating, producing, and presenting dance performances. As the artistic director/producer of CTFD Gala events, she has had the opportunity to further evolve her talent for synthesis.
Each performance is based on a consistent core formula: Dance-based work engages extraordinary, high-level artists from multiple movement-based genres. They use their talents in unexpected ways, marrying their work together in an innovative performance that creates new, indefinable dimensions of entertainment. IN THE MIX blends unique talents and skills to create a high-powered, energetic piece of theatre, both creating an audience-pleasing performance package, and generating an insight into the individual art forms as they merge to create new boundary-crossing work.

The Spring 2008 Workshop/Performance: The next workshop of IN THE MIX! will take place in the Spring of 2008. Artists scheduled to perform include:

  • Steve “Mr. Wiggles” Clemente, Hip Hop pioneer

  • Jason Samuels Smith, tap wizard

  • Sara Joel and Kevin Gibbs, former Cirque du Soleil artists

  • John Seyla, a Tony Award® nominee for Movin’ Out

  • Anthony Bryant, “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant

  • Lorena Feijoo, internationally known ballerina.

History DeAngelo conceived, produced and directed the first “concept” of the show under the title Zeitgeist from 1985 through 1989. Later full-evening works evolved. And, in 2001, The Variety Show – Jugglin’ Styles with performances at the Annenberg Center in Philadelphia, and other venues evolved. As one reviewer put it, “at times variously merged, clashed and, collided…The overwhelming diversity kept the audience of all ages on-the-edge-of-their seats, culminating in a whelping standing ovation.” The list of artists who have worked in a DeAngelo’s The Variety Show: Jugglin’ Styles included:

  • Michael Moschen - juggler/illusionist and MacArthur “genius award” Fellowship winner

  • Ann Carlson, performance artist

  • Joanna Haigood, environmental choreographer and Guggenheim Award recipient

  • Steve “Mr. Wiggles” Clemente, Hip Hop pioneer

  • Sarah East Johnson. circus performers and Bessie Award winner
